To top it all off, the old world of Azeroth has been completely revamped so that most players will want to take a look at where things have gone and how the old world will now look. So, rolling an alt this time around is a much bigger decision. How will you make it?

The New Races – Worgens and Goblins join the ranks this time through and the beta word is that they are very fun to play. That means lots of fun new low level quests, new options for special abilities and just play coolness in your new characters. There will be a lot of people out there rerolling just to try them out, so expect some serious crowding.

New Combos – There are more than a dozen new race/class combos available in the expansion as well. Players can pick up long wanted combos like Dwarf Shaman or Troll Druid. Nothing major changes for these characters, but the simple fact that a never before available combo is there and that you can now play through the revamped Azeroth will change how the game feels on a fundamental level.

Where Do You Want to Explore – Everyone will want to explore somewhere different. The changes to Old Azeroth are extensive, the new starting zones are a lot of fun, and the end-game content is bigger and badder than ever. Which of these brand new areas do you want to try out and how will you prioritize the ever growing to do list that the expansion is thrusting upon you?

The key to rerolling is to know what you want to get out of the new content. If you’re setting foot in Azeroth for the first time in 3 years, what content do you want to see more than anything else? If you have rerolled dozens of times since Wrath, maybe you’d like to stay with the new races. And if you’re simply bored with all this buzz and want to hit Level 85, what 80 will you take there? It’s a lot to process, but above all else, make sure you’re ready with a plan, not only for which character you’ll roll but how much gold you’ll need to do it.

How Expansion Gold Making Works

The idea is simple. When an expansion comes along, the entire game economy is turned on its head. Players no longer have any idea what’s valuable or what things should sell for. It’s because the demand goes up so high and the supply is so low. It’s not just the items already in the game, however. Players will also be looking for lower level items this time around because of the influx of new alts in the form of Goblins, Worgens, and the new race/class combos.

What You’ll Need

So to take advantage of this surge of interest in low level items, you should start stockpiling certain items that will almost assuredly resurge in value after cataclysm launches. Because no one will be in Outland or Northrend and because most lower level players will be in too much of a hurry to farm their own stuff, you can sell items from those areas for HUGE markup and make a massive profit, but only if you stock up now.

The Risks and Rewards of Planning

If you plan now, you can make a lot of gold, but only if you know exactly what to stock up on. Some items will completely lose their value when cataclysm comes out and will never regain it. Others will be worthless for weeks until demand suddenly rebounds after everyone hits level 85. So, there is a risk for sure that you might stockpile the wrong items or sell them at the wrong time, but there is also a big chance for profit if you plan properly, well in advance.

If you’re serious about preparing for Cataclysm when it releases on December 7th, you need to have a plan. The number one most important thing you can do in that plan is have gold set aside through careful investments. Do that, and you’ll be ready to sell out at key moments and make a tremendous profit off of the inundation of new lowbie characters and professions that surge through your server. Have fun first and foremost, but don’t forget to make a tidy little profit.

New Class/Race Combos – Other than the overhaul of Azeroth, the biggest buzz point right now is the wave of new alts that will be inundating the game when it relaunches on December 7th. Players will be loading up as Dwarf Shamans, Troll Druids and Night Elf Mages (among a dozen other new combos). Additionally, we have Worgens and Goblins joining the ranks as new races.

Stat and Talent Changes – In the 4.0.1 patch, we’ll see the overhaul of our classes finally which will completely revamp the talent trees and set into motion another two years of tinkering and tweaking to get the balance just right. With all those changes come a reload on the enchants, gems, and gear we all use. How much will those things change once half our stats are removed from the game?

Revamped Professions – They aren’t changing as much as the rest of the game, but the professions will be getting a big overhaul as well. That means things like glyphs becoming learned, jewelcrafters getting new dailies and all sorts of new transmutes to complement the new items. Look for other new features as well like random stats on crafted gear.

Guild Leveling System – This is a big one as it will drive a lot of guild membership in the new version of the game. With a hard guild cap of 600, and a load of new bonuses available for guild members who are active, there will be lots of reasons to be in a good guild, which can cost you gold and time.

There are dozens more additions to the game – all of which will have a profound impact on how you play your characters going forward, but some changes will have a more immediate impact. How much gold will you have when you need to replace your glyphs, revamp your enchants, level up new alts, and get into a good guild where you can take advantage of all those new rewards? The big question here is preparation and if you’re not prepared, it will be hard to take full advantage of all the new fun stuff.

Common Expenses

There are a lot of small expenses that most people forget about. It costs money to train new skills, professions and pets. You’ll also need to pick up consumables to speed along the levelling process and most characters will need to buy new gear when they reach Level 85 so they can start playing in the dungeons or raids right away (unless you do full progression). You’ll also need to pay for things like the new flying upgrade and if you have any alts that you want to level up, those are even pricier. Sit down and make a full list of all these expenses and know for sure how much gold you need BEFORE you set foot in Cataclysm.

Professions and Farming

One of the biggest expenses in a new expansion is the upgrade cost for a profession. It costs a lot of gold to get any crafting profession from 450 to 525 and if you’re one of the unlucky few with Blacksmithing or Jewelcrafting, even more gold than everyone else. So, make sure you have enough cash on hand to reach the new cap. Also, get the right farming professions in place to speed it along if at all possible.

New Stuff

There’s a lot of new stuff coming your way in Cataclysm – from epic flying in Azeroth to new race/class combos to a variety of new ways to play your current classes. Gold is a must so make sure you plan accordingly before we get to December.

How much gold you need for an expansion really depends on what you hope to get out of the game. If your goal is to get every new item, upgrade, and piece of gear that has fallen into the game since the last expansion, you’ll need a LOT of gold on standby. If you just want to reach Level 85 and enjoy a few raids, you need far less, but you still need a good stash, especially when you take inflation into account for the new consumables and crafting goods. Be ready and the xpac will be much more fun.

1. Gold – Step one, get some gold because expansions are very pricey. You need to have a good gold stash on hand from the start because the inflation rate for all new items will be ridiculous. If you plan on upgrading your professions, buying dungeon gear, or loading up on new items for any of your common activities, you need to have a lot of gold on standby. So, sit down and map out your specific plans (see step 3) and then assign a generous gold amount for each so you know how much you’ll need.

2. Gear – Leveling is easy, but what about when you reach level 85 and want to go into a dungeon, or what about when you hit level 30, 40, and 50 in the old world with your new Worgen? What do you do when you need to upgrade your gear to keep your levelling speed up? Do you have the items on hand you need or do you need to pick it up? If you stock up on the gear now, you’ll save a LOT of gold for later because the prices are going to spike very high when there are a million players all in need of level 40 mail or plate.

3. A Plan – Finally, make a plan. Sit down and map out everything you want to do when you get into the expansion and your plan for how to do it. This includes all the new places you want to visit, the alts you plan on rolling, the mounts you want to buy and so on. The sooner you can determine what you need to accomplish your goals, the sooner you can set about getting those things BEFORE the expansion hits.

Gaming in an expansion is tough. If you fall behind, the realms get crowded, slow and quests are nearly impossible to finish. If you get too far ahead, it’s empty and a little lonely. So, make sure you know exactly what you need before you start the new segment of WoW and have the tools necessary to get those things on day one.

I got tired of it last time and almost gave up on the game completely, so when I saw that T Dub Sanders had a new guide out called Cataclysm Insider showing you how to prepare for a new expansion by building your inventory up for gold making, I was pretty interested. After all, an expansion only comes around every two years and I sure as heck didn’t do well last time.

It turns out that Cataclysm Insider is a preparation guide for the expansion. There are some other ideas like this floating around, with many of them focused on things like “how to prepare your account” with achievement completions and whatnot. However, we all know that gold making is where your preparation energies should be focused. What else is there to worry about, really?

You won’t make tons of gold before the expansion hits. The idea is to stockpile certain items and prepare your account for when Cataclysm comes out, so that when the game launches you’ll be ready to play the game at top speed from Level 80-85 (or 1-85 if you’re a Worgen/Goblin fan).

It remains to be seen just how great these tips are, because we won’t see the results until the expansion hits, but already I can see exactly what T Dub is having people do and it’s going to work like a charm, but only if you’re actually READY for the expansion.

It’s a tough one. No one knows for sure how messed up the economy will get when the xpac goes live, but we do know it will be messed up (it always is). Some items will be completely worthless, others will be on hold for a while. Others still will disappear from use entirely.

And it doesn’t help that in Cataclysm all of our stats and talents are going to change, plus this time around we have tons of new alts starting up with new class combos, two new races and the rebuilt Azeroth to check out.

So, how do you make cash in that new environment so that you can afford all the cool new stuff Blizzard has been cooking up for two years?

It starts with a bit of preparation – something that Cataclysm Insider has been developed to help you do.

Why a Guide?

You’re probably wondering why you need a guide to help you prepare for Cataclysm right now. What does it have that common sense can’t get you. I can’t speak for everyone (and some of you are pretty good at this stuff), but my head starts spinning when an expansion comes along and it doesn’t stop until a couple of months have passed.

I get overwhelmed. With Cataclysm Insider, it looks like that content induced vertigo won’t be an issue. The idea being that if you know what to buy and what to sell and when to do it, that you can make a tremendous amount of gold in Cataclysm without having to give up the things you’d rather be doing when the xpac hits – like levelling, raiding, or PvP.

It remains to be seen just how good the tips in this guide will turn out being, but as of right now, I can already see a lot of players getting a huge jump start on everyone else in the preparation game. If you’re not already doing so, remember – you only have until December 7th – then you’re on your own.

So, when I heard about Cataclysm Insider – the newest option from T Dub Sanders – I wanted to know for sure whether this was something worth investing in. Was yet another gold guide worth buying when there are so many out there?

The Quality Test

The first thing on my agenda, of course, was to see whether the other guides on the market passed what I call the quality test. Are they capable of making you any gold? There are quite a few guides out there that just plain…well, they’re bad.

They promise results and then flower you with out of date, overused tips that don’t even reap much gold any longer. They have tips from BC or even worse, Vanilla in them and they haven’t been updated since the 3.0 patch….pre-Wrath. So, those are automatically discounted.

But, how does Cataclysm Insider stack up against guides that have the pedigree and results to prove their worth? There are a few of them and they are very interesting options for anyone ready to put in a bit of hard work.

I’m happy to report that Cataclysm Insider is not the standard gold guide. It’s not a rehash of the same old “fish here, farm there, sell that, buy this” mentality. You won’t get yet another Auctioneer walkthrough (though the obligatory mention is in there – mercifully, T Dub admits you should have a good handle on it by now, though).

Instead, Cataclysm Insider assumes you know a bit about your account and your gold making chances. It then outlines exactly what to sell, what to buy and how to prepare for Cataclysm, a full two months out.

Of course, if you’re reading this closer to December 7th, that means your time is running low. The whole premise of Cataclysm Insider is that you can make gold if you start preparing before the expansion hits. I personally see huge profit potential here. If you haven’t checked it out yet, get in there and do so now.

The name is Cataclysm Insider and it looks to be the kind of guide most gold-farmers are looking for.

Until then you don’t really have to worry much about gearing your character because all your Icecrown Citadel Epic gear will easily be replaced by level 81 Blue gear. (I’m not joking)

Again high level profession will be in demand and there will be a huge rush for everybody to level their profession for Cataclysm so they can craft or access higher level items.

So deciding to finally level up that level 300 Tailoring during Cataclysm  will cost you a lot more then what it would have cost you to level it to 450 right now.

3. Explore Azeroth and earn Achievements!

After Cataclysm Azeroth will be dramatically changed forever. Its time for you to take a trip down memory lane and view the old Azeroth in its former glory for the last time..

and also to finally complete your Explorer achievement for you ‘Explorer’ title and tabard reward.

4. Earn faction reputations!

Guild Leveling will be a big part of Cataclysm and your individual reputation to different factions will count towards your guild achievements.

Having a lot of exalted reputation completed right now will make you very attractive to any guild wanting to recruit.

5. Complete the achievements that you have always wanted!

Don’t feel like raiding or PVP because you don’t need anymore gear ?
